Overall the differences are quite small and it is not wrong to say that the names MBT-70 and KPz-70 are almost interchangeable. What is most notable is the difference in autoloaders, for the General Motors autoloader could house ATGMs while the Rheinmetall autoloader could not, but the latter loaded shells faster. Differences between the MBT-70 and KPz-70 are mostly manufacturers, with the KPz-70 using German parts while the MBT-70 uses American parts.

The KPz-70 never had the 120mm, and was never planned to have it from what I can tell. It is this tank that first had the 120mm smoothbore that would be later found in the Leopard 2. If you read that article more closely without jumping the gun, you'll notice that they explicitly reference the Keiler as having the 120mm, which is this thing:Īccording to Krapke, the Keiler is a parallel project to the KPz-70 and has no composite nor spaced armor to really speak of. The article in no way references the KPz-70 as using the 120mm smoothbore.
